THE HISTORY OF DESIGNER BAGS

Hi my dear friends and readers! Today I am going to give you some fascinating and captivating information about the designer bags. Today lots of women prefer to have designer bags for their comfort and at the same time it will shows their status. Contrary to the common belief that designer bags are a recent phenomenon, they have been around since the nineteenth century. Before the 1980’s, classic European designer labels were purveyors of quality leather goods to royalty, the nobility and the wealthy. The advent of mass media, a celebrity’s star power and mass production in the late twentieth century gave way to the democratization of such exclusive brands.
For the average woman, a handbag was nothing more than a utilitarian accessory to carry a lady’s personal effects that she may need for the occasion. Before the names entered the lexicon of the average suburban American woman, most women did not give much thought to their handbags in relation to the rest of her wardrobe, let alone the label of the handbag. Most handbags sold were limited to the colors of black, brown or beige.

The ability of a popular celebrity to generate free advertising for a designer’s product has been largely responsible for the democratization of luxury. Celebrities photographed carrying or wearing the latest designers’ products turn into instant stylish products to own. Designers fully take advantage of the star power phenomenon by making less expensive versions of bags used by celebrities. Many designer classic pieces now have multiple incarnations that come in canvas or vinyl, which makes the prices more affordable to the average middle class working woman. In turn, the average woman buys not so much the physical handbag itself but more of what it symbolizes and implies-luxury, wealth and class.

The association between a celebrity and a purse can be traced back to a 1956 photo of Princess Grace carrying a particular handbag by a French design house. Although the said French design house has been making that same purse the princess was carrying; it was that photograph that elevated that handbag as the most coveted accessory. Today, that same purse remains an iconic piece that’s still strongly associated with the princess’ beauty. A few decades later, the late Princess Diana repeated history by making another handbag by another French designer an iconic piece after she was photographed carrying that particular purse.

As women continued to covet the newest handbags, the accessories industry has seen a transformation in that they have the now become the biggest moneymaker for many designers. During the 1990’s, popular designers designed purses in varying materials by issuing them in limited editions which created a legion of collectors.
Each designer is associated with a particular piece. An Italian designer is famed for his bright-colored purses, while another one in Milan is linked with the nylon backpack, an American designer for her practical nylon tote bags and a two French fashion houses are inextricably linked with two princesses who were legendary for their style in during their heyday.

Designer bags have become the way for many women to announce her status to the world. It’s a way for her to project what she is or what she aspires to be. A designer handbag has a way of making a woman feel good about her that a designer garment can sometimes fail to do. Garments from the same designer can make a feel woman inadequate if can’t fit into those slinky garments. A purse from the same designer, on the other hand, goes with any body type.
